People are trying to communicate with their dead once relatives since the prehistoric time but it gain popularity in the 19^th century.  Mediums are the people with spiritual powers who are supposed to communicate between the spirits of the dead and living human beings. Scientist communities however do not support this idea of communication between living and dead. Some parapsychologists do support this idea of medium as some of their researches suggest that such communication is possible. Several religious beliefs systems are associated with this practice which mostly includes Spiritualism, Spiritism, Espiritismo, Candomble, voodoo, umbanda and some other new groups.   

Attempts to communicate with the spirits have been documented back to the early man on this planet. Most of the people also relate this with their religion and support their views with the references of the old Testaments. But all this was enough to earn fame and it got popularity when a new religious movement with the name of Spiritualism rises in united state in 19^th century.  Its practice starts from the churches of Spiritualists and its techniques also gain popularity in the same years.  Many books with the topic of spirit guide publish in that years in which Spiritualist wrote about their experience with medium at different places. They supposed and used the term a spirit guide to describe the entity that remains an immortal spirit in order to act as guide or a defender to a living personified human being.  This term can also refer to saints, totems, angles or guardians’ spirits or angles.  Some spirit guide also live as energy but these are very high level of spirit guide.  In the present era demonstration of mediumship is the part of church service at all churches that are affiliated with National Spiritualist Association of Churches. 

Communication of medium with the spirits by using the techniques of telepathy is known as mental mediumship and it involves seeing, hearing or feeling the message from the spirits. The method of communication in which the medium directly or with the help of the spirit guide passes the information to the message recipient b mentally hearing is called clairaudience and if he process involves the phenomena of mentally seeing or feel the message from the spirit it is known as clairvoyance and clairsentience respectively. The particular person for whom the mediums used to do reading is known as sitter.  Trance medium is another form of mental mediumship in which the mediums remain conscious during the period of communication as the spirit uses the medium’s mind to communicate and the medium allows the echo to step away for delivering the message.    

There are various types and a method of communication with the spirits has been developed by the believers of Spiritualist.
